I made a Pact with Myself
I was told by a friend that I was brave. Another person commended me for making an executive decision, knowing there could be a public impact. I felt validated. Someone else told me she would pray for me.
But underneath all of that, I felt an extreme urgency to change my life...
So, I shifted
A shift in the way I think. A shift in what I’m willing to accept. A shift that requires me to make some changes if I’m going to feel secure, fulfilled, and genuinely in love with my life.
A few of you already understand. No explanation needed.
For everybody else, you may need to read this.
Let me tell you...
I didn't have time to be saved by a deity or wait to reincarnate into a better life. I did have time to reassess my life and remember the pact I made with myself almost 30 years ago: Closer to 50 will be my time!!
First and foremost, I had to dedicate everything to my children. At just 20 years old, I became a mother to my eldest child. It was crucial for me to make sacrifices for them, ensuring they had what they needed. I was willing to put myself last when necessary because I chose motherhood and embraced that responsibility wholeheartedly. However, when my time arrives, I will choose me.
I knew keeping that pact might eventually require some uncomfortable endings. I might have to break the hearts of partners whose passions no longer aligned with mine. I might have to walk away from career paths that provided security but no longer provided purpose. I might have to disappoint people who had grown comfortable with a version of me that I had no interest in being. And most importantly, I might have to reinvent myself over and over again until I'm living the life I can close my eyes and be at peace with.
Yessss, I might be Selfish but I don't give a damn.
Let me tell you why.
I don't believe in killing myself!!
Sacrifice can sound noble, but when you’re constantly sacrificing yourself for the benefit of someone or something else, eventually that sacrifice can become the death of who you are.
Any person, partnership, career, or opportunity that has access to your life should recognize your value and contribute to an environment where happiness, growth, and success are possible. And when someone believes their needs, dreams, or comfort should continuously supersede yours, we may need to have a real conversation about who is actually being selfish.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I believe in compromise but I prefer alignment.
Compromise says we can meet somewhere in the middle. Alignment says we’re headed in the same direction. And at this stage of my life, I’m no longer interested in constantly negotiating just to maintain something that doesn’t fit the future I’m building. I'm too old for that sh@t. (excuse me)
So, I’m keeping my pact.
I’m choosing myself.

I’ll be sharing this journey as I go. Learn from it. Share it. Question it. Doubt it if you need to.
But one thing you won’t be able to say is that you heard my story from somebody else.
